A total of 28 illegal immigrants have reportedly been apprehended in Texas' Rio Grande Valley Sector since Thursday.
U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents at the Falfurrias checkpoint found 12 people hidden in a trailer who were sweating profusely and had difficulty breathing, The Monitor reports.
At the same checkpoint, agents responded to a rescue beacon nearby indicating that one Mexican, four Guatemalans and two Haitian nationals activated Friday after apparently being lost in brush for three days. Agents also reportedly saved another individual who grew fatigued while swimming in the Rio Grande River on Friday.
“People need to realize the border area is a harsh environment that should not be underestimated or taken for granted,” Chief Patrol Agent Rosendo Hinojosa said in a statement.
Border Patrol agents offered medical attention to all individuals and processed them to be returned to their countries of origin, The Monitor reports, citing a news release on the apprehensions.
