INDIANAPOLIS – Prosecutors have filed a murder charge against a convicted felon they say fatally shot an Indianapolis police officer during a traffic stop.
Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry announced the charges against 60-year-old Thomas Hardy during a news conference Thursday.
Hardy also faces charges of robbery and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
Curry says prosecutors will decide within about a month whether to seek the death penalty. He says prosecutors will consult with the family of 29-year-old Officer David Moore.
Moore was declared brain-dead three days after being shot twice in the head during a weekend traffic stop and taken off life support.
State correction officials say Hardy was on parole and had been erroneously released from jail in December.
