An Ohio church held a mock retrial of Casey Anthony during its service on Sunday, resulting in a "hung jury" for the 25-year-old Orlando woman who was acquitted earlier this month of killing her 2-year-old daughter.
Sunday's exercise at the In Touch With Christ Christian Center in Cleveland was led by the Rev. Una Keenon, a retired municipal court judge in the community of East Cleveland, Fox 8 reports.
Anthony was found not guilty by an Orlando jury of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, in a first-degree murder trial that captivated the nation. She was convicted instead of lying to investigators during the child's 2008 disappearance and sentenced to one year in prison for each of the four counts of providing falsehoods to detectives. Anthony, who was given credit for time already served, was released from jail on Sunday and sent to an undisclosed location.
Like many Americans around the country, some parishioners at the Cleveland church were angered by the verdict, according to the station. On Sunday, church goers held their own trial to determine whether the Orlando mother was guilty of killing Caylee, whose remains were found nearly six months after she was reported missing.
Keenon asked the 12 church members who acted as jurors to consider whether it would be right to send Anthony to death row if she did not kill her child.
"Would it be better for [Casey Anthony] to go to death row and be killed for killing her child when she didn't? Because if that maybe is in there, then I would say 'no, it's not fair,' " Keenon reportedly said.
The church jury was hung, with eight voting guilty and four voting not guilty.
"I pleaded not guilty because like Rev. Keenon said, it goes behind the facts of the case and they didn't have 100-percent of the facts saying that she was guilty," said Darius Coleman, one of the mock jurors.
"I feel like even if she didn't murder her child by her own hands, she played a part in it, so she's guilty by association, so that's why I voted guilty for her," said another.
Bishop Prince Moultry, the church pastor, said the important lesson from the service was to protect children in Cleveland from the same fate as little Caylee Anthony.
