MORGAN HILL, Calif. – A woman accused of stealing a car in Northern California with a 1-month-old inside has surrendered to authorities.
Thirty-three-year-old Maribel Mejia of San Martin a second suspect, Enrique Rocha, are accused of stealing an Infiniti sedan from a Morgan Hill church parking lot in May with Mariana Corona inside. The infant's mother, Miribel Corona, had left her in the car with the keys inside.
Several hours later, the car was found abandoned in Salinas, about 40 miles away, with the girl still strapped in her car seat. She was not hurt.
Police say the suspects were identified after they used Corona's credit cards.
Mejia turned herself into Morgan Hill police this week and is charged with kidnapping, child endangerment, vehicle theft and receiving stolen property. Rocha remains at large.
